Welcome all to the MHD flow group. The main idea here is to share knowledge and to develop one of the best MHD solver ever made.

Cheers,

Carlos

hi,

good to have a least one buddy here. i won´t beat around the bush. i have some experience in OF when it comes to cavitation, phase change stuff basically. since i´m now into welding and solidification i would highly appreciate some collaborative work concerning the "best solver" ever,...

isn´t there a solver yet?? i hardly remember reading a phd-work about building exactly what we are planing to create, except the "best".

Greets,
Matthias

First of all welcome to the group.

In fact there is a solver in openFoam namely the mhdFoam, which was build for incompressible, resistive MHD equations.

The objective here, as a part of mine phd work is to build a solver that is able to solve the compressible MHD equations, which is not straightforward.

In my case, the final objective of this solver is to model mpd thrusters, with turbulence.

Could you give me the reference of that phd-work?

Greets,

Carlos

i found the diploma work which i was thinking of (www.tfd.chalmers.se/~lada/postscript_files/lic-thesis-margarita.pdf) ... and the related phd-work, which, unfortunately, isn´t available at present (hv.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf?pid=diva2:315677).

speaking of phd-works,... my major task will be the combination of OF and some kind of PF-Model or CA approach to solve for the grainsize and growing crystals during solidification.

if you find smth. related on your way through the web please let my know.

Great!!

Ok.. this thesis is for the case of low magnetic Reynolds Number. In this particular case the coupling betwen the Maxwell and N-S equations is weak, and the lorentz force could be added as a source term.

In our case we will solve for the more general case. So the induction equation is solved and the lorentz force is added as a set of stresses.
I recomend you to read the last chapter of the programmers guide.

Mine main contribuition is to build the algorithm for the compressible/resistive MHD equations, and the thermophisical model for the propelant that is used in MPD trhusters. Finally I will modify the turbulence models in order to account the lorentz force.

Cheers,

Carlos

hy,

since i finally finished a very time consuming company project, i can now focus on mhdFoam. Finally.
I was especially looking for a more sophisticated mhd-solver, with letting me specify U and J as bc, or smth. simmilar.

Any hints regarding "newer" solvers? Otherwise i will have to do it on my own.

btw, what do you mean by "low" Re-numbers (Rem=u0*L*sigma*mu)?
